Julie JeffsI have many years experience working with people with a wide range of mental health problems and have learned how each individual is unique and how different people may benefit from different approaches to tackling their difficulties. I work with individuals, couples and families, I offer both long-term therapy and shorter term therapy (for EAP programmes, for instance). I have been working as a therapist for many years and provide short term counselling and long term psychotherapy to individuals, couples and families.

Ron Wood (Professional Advisor) - Chartered Clinical & Counselling Psychologist

Ron Wood I bring to the Waterloo Wellbeing Centre broad knowledge and experience of psychological therapies and of mental health care generally. I am professional advisor to the practice and provide guidance to help maintain high professional and ethical standards.

I have worked in independent practice in Plymouth and West Devon. From 1970 until 1999 I worked within mental health services in the NHS and my last NHS post was as Head of the Adult Mental Health Psychology Service in Plymouth. I trained in, and continue to work in, a research and therapeutic tradition that aims to respond to the particular psychological needs of each person. Individual, couple/family and group psychotherapy have all been part of my work for more than thirty-five years. I have experience in training and supervising clinical psychologists, counselling psychologists and other mental health professionals.

Since taking early retirement from the NHS in August 1999 I have worked independently in Plymouth, combining private practice in therapy and supervision with working for voluntary organisations in the field of mental health. I have worked for many years with mental health service-user organisations in Plymouth to develop patient advocacy.

Our Mindfulness Practitioners

Julie Jeffs

Julie Jeffs"A Great Silence overcomes me, and I wonder why I ever thought to use language." (Rumi)

I trained as a mindfulness-based psychotherapist at the Karuna Institute - one of the oldest centres worldwide to integrate and teach mindfulnesspractices. I have many years' experience working as a therapist, trainer and supervisor. I have been interested in meditation for many years and my professional training at the Karuna Institute and Bagnor University has provided me with the qualifications and skills to integrate this distinctive approach into my work. I attend regular retreats and mindfulness events at Sharpham, Devon, Trigonos, Wales, Gaia House, Devon and the Karuna Institute. Mindfulness is a way of becoming more aware of how we are; how we breathe, how we walk, how we live our lives. Mindfulness helps us to fully notice our experience here and now. It enables us to embrace the 'full catastrophe' of living; to experience all of our lives; the good times and the inevitable difficult times. As the co-founder of the Waterloo Wellbeing Centre I offer trainings in mindfulness and regularly facilitate the mindfulness sitting group on Tuesday evenings.

Our Complementary Therapists

Julie Makarewicz, Bowen Therapist

Julie MakarewiczGet Going with Body Mind Therapies

Are you living with chronic, acute or emotional pain? Are you living with movement restrictions or postural issues?

Have you tried most conventional routes and been unable to find a solution or relief?

Are you looking for a more natural approach that works with you, your body and your mind, rather than having force or invasive procedures done to make the changes?

Are you tired of taking pain medication and the way the side effects make you feel, which means you need to take more medication as a result?

Then I could be just the person with a possible solution to your problems. Resourcing from a pool of the therapies such as Bowen Therapy, Neuro-Structural Integration Therapy, Body Mind Work, Brain Move and Specialist Scar work, her aim is to use a combined approach that provides individually tailored treatments that are shaped to meet your needs and life experiences.

Much of my working life was spent in a variety of care settings, caring for a wide range of people living with both mental and physical health needs from acquired injuries to life changing conditions. Seeing it as a privilege, I saw it as a great opportunity to appreciate and learn about the complexity of issues that were faced by those living with their pain and conditions, as well as understanding the challenges that they faced in the wider community first hand. Being in a position of great trust and witnessing people at their most vulnerable enabled me to gain a tremendous insight as to the pain and anguish often felt by individuals and their family carers. This was greatly evidenced as the transition from mobility to immobility occurred and the dynamics of families changed, not only physically with equipment and increased care visits, but also emotionally as these changes often came with an unspoken recognition, that conditions or circumstances were progressing in a way that people struggled to deal with often leading to family carers becoming ill themselves. During my time working in care I was also living with chronic pain as a result of a sustained spinal injury during a riding accident, it enabled me to experience the route experienced by many that live with chronic pain. However, I felt that there had to be a better solution to taking tablets or spinal injections and I found it in Bowen Therapy. This started my journey into a more nurturing approach to the body and mind using the therapies I have trained in and to help people that had problems with finding possible solutions and help facilitate them getting better and back to their amazing self.

David Scott - Shiatsu therapy

David ScottI offer Shiatsu therapy at the Centre on Thursday mornings. I work physically on the energetic flows in the body (based on Chinese medicine) to support healing of emotional and physical pains that can take hold as a result of unhelpful life patterns, dissatisfactions, and unmet needs in the inner-self. Shiatsu works with outward pains and illnesses as a way to connect with their deeper causes, and this is the arena where it can often bring about real change. As the basis for treatments, I take time to understand individual circumstances, life complexities, and a person's particular wants and challenges.

In practical terms, my shiatsu sessions involve work on the over-active and tension-filled parts of the body, as well as the more tired and empty parts. Healing happens at the meeting of these two 'yin and yang' aspects. I use soft and hard hand/finger pressure, stretches, joint rotations, and also work with acupressure points. Shiatsu is a clothed therapy and takes place on a mat on the floor - or sitting on a chair if required.

I welcome people for treatment of a range of issues. Most often, I work with people experiencing problems such as stress, anxiety, fatigue, body pain/tension, and complaints like on going headaches or digestion problems.

I am in the final stages of training at the Bristol School of Shiatsu, and am offering reduced rates to reflect this.
